This is a well written novel but I just didn’t like the narrator’s voice, perhaps I cannot relate to a teenage boy turned adult. Also, I believe that the author’s own background and tragic suicide after this last book colours the public’s overall rating of this.

Efficiency: a quality that humans have developed continuously for millennia and which has always gone hand in hand with increases in total consumption, resource usage and environmental impact. It has always been and still is integral to the dynamics of growth, with all its benefits and, increasingly, its problems.

Worse still were the labour camps. The idea of using Palestinian prisoners as forced labour came from the Israeli military command and was endorsed by the politicians… the authorities used the prisoners in any job that could help strengthen both the Israeli economy and the army’s capabilities.

Probably one of the most important books ever written about the advent and formation of the only Jewish state in the world

A bit kooky but if you can suspend the inner critic that disbelieves the power self-care and reflection, the exercises and affirmations are very healing.

“Gordon, who has mutated from a golden lad to a successful man, shrewd, respected and handsome with it. Women fall for him from Singapore to Stanford. And there is Sylvia, whose girlish prettiness has given way to a plump and nondescript maturity, and whose conversation is of climate, the price of things and children’s schooling.”

For those habituated to high levels of internal stress since early childhood, it is the absence of stress that creates unease, evoking boredom and a sense of meaninglessness. People may become addicted to their own stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, Hans Selye observed. To such persons stress feels desirable.

I’m kind of ambivalent about this book so far. Author is giving so many anthropological examples to support his argument that it’s difficult to follow what the argument actually is.

My grandmother knew what a painful life had taught her: success or failure, the truth of a life really has little to do with its quality. The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention.

A bit fluffy with too much academic jargon but if you ignore those parts it’s a good read so far
