While I understand that this is a book taking place in a camp of soldiers and the women they have taken as slaves, is the profanity necessary? I get it - this is a war zone and the concerns about language would be laughed at but it does bother me.

My heart breaks for so much of this story and yet Dickens does it beautifully.

While the prose is a little much and I wish the author would have taken the time to draw some conclusions for life today, the author has chosen some great saints.

I can already tell that this is a series I am going to hate waiting for. And here is why I prefer to wait until a series is done before I begin reading it.

Why is it so easy to forget how brilliant Dickens is? This is such a great book and I had completely forgotten how good until I began rereading it.

I can see why this is such a compelling book but I question the validity of Golding’s thesis. Are we all beasts beneath the veneer of civilization? Is the true villain human nature itself?

This is another great example of how Chesterton is master of descriptions. The first paragraph is simply magical.
