I am almost done with the book, and I can't help wondering these things: 1)Jack's current wife has TWO daughters, why is only one helping him? What is the second one's take on all this? 2) Why would Jack write a letter (in prison) to his step-daughter and not his own wife. Why would he "spoucify" his step-daughter like he did in the letter? 3) I keep thinking Jack's dad had something to do with it.

Generational incest, abuse, and a murder leave this guy (who's got three different names) claiming his innocence. His trials are hitting the local papers in our area, but either way, his background and history gave him way too much freedom those many years he got away with touching and destroying the lives of many. Married four times, this guy has never repented of any of his sick abuse!

"..... I'd get to bed many a night crying in drunken self-pity, and I'd talk to God and tell him, "Listen, You. Can you get your arse up to Fifth Avenue and tell that woman she has to love me again? If you do that, I'll return to the Church and become a shining example to all. I'll raise the children as Catholics, and I'll get Linda to convert. Now what do you say to that?" No answer

....But as my wife and I went through this journey of loss, I can to KNOW that God was true. That's a different thing than believing in God because someone has preached to you, or because you've read it in a book. Through pain I came to know God was there, personally. He was with me through it all."

....."For most of us it takes a lifetime to realize we're like kids walking through the playground holding our Daddy's hand-we can only see his knees. When I converted at the age of sixteen, I knew everything there was to know about Christianity. Now that I'm fifty-two I know nothing. Except that I think there probably is a God and I think he's probably quite nice. What do you think, Sheridan?"

"An ultrasound a few days later reveals that there had never been a baby. A gestational sac had been responsible for those pregnancy-like symptoms. While it should've housed a little body, it was empty. Even the doctors had been fooled. Merryn doesn't cry when the doctor explains what has happened." Page 26

I was surprised at the poor reviews since I read two of his brother's books. This is Malachy's story and I wondered how it would twine in with his brother's. I am enjoying it despite the poor reviews. The McCourt's have a way of story telling that would blow away Jerry Springer!

I was surprised at the poor reviews, I am enjoying it! This is his own story, his side, and like the McCourt's do, they NEVER waste a story.

Just finished the book today, went straight to the book store and bought the author's TEACHER book, and two of his brother's books (Malachy McCourt). My heart breaks for his mother, what a definition of self-sacrifice. Cheers to you Frank McCourt.......I have become a fan!
