I last read this 45 years ago. This time round, I'm enjoying the slow build. It's a travesty that Tom Bombadil was left out of the two cinematic versions. Yes, it doesn't directly forward the plot, but that said, it's a fun interlude with some interesting world building. I'd rather have seen Tom in the Jackson film than a lot of the extraneous material that was added.

Taking my time with this. The prose is dense, but it's also very precise and yields a lot of food for thought. Phenomenal theological, philosophical, and psychological insights.

Great first chapter. Falls off a little after that, but still has some compelling scenes and world building.

The editing is, unfortunately, a bit sloppy--too many run-on lines, description lists, word and phrase repetition (and even an entire paragraph is virtually repeated at one stage). The phrasing can be quite unorthodox, which throws me out of the story at times. Nevertheless, enjoyable so far. Orka is #1
