Moore was the Bond I grew up with. Films like Moonraker were my Marvel "event", and James Bond was my favorite superhero.

Voice and character, voice and character. Mix in with some stylish prose and a pinch of unreliability. That is to say, yep, loving this so far.

My first by Powers--enjoying it.

Academic conspiracy theories and lit-geek romance, all wrapped inside the pages of this book lover's book. Not sure why everyone isn't talking about this.

[ She shrugged, said, "So the nuns who weren't nuns might not have even been people. Go on," and took another bite of her apple.
"I didn't say for sure that they weren't people. But for a moment they seemed more like ravens trying very hard to look like people. Maybe trying too hard, and because they were so self-conscious, I could see that they were actually ravens."]

Really all that needs to be said so far.

Book Three starts off with invented and enhanced politicians before moving quickly into the "chipping" chapter comprised of Shirley's short story, Wolves of the Plateau.

This story and some of these ideas feel far closer to the cyberpunk most people know, so I'm curious how this third book plays out using these ideas.

First and foremost, a dystopian extrapolation of the extreme edges of modern politics: neo-fascists maneuvering through the guise of pseudo-christian stability and order, and the small underground rebellion trying their best to fight it. Given the political circus of our modern world, Shirley's scenario reads like a nightmare alt-reality we could all trip into if we forget to keep our eyes open.

This goes everywhere, and through a wide variety of characters. Future dystopian revolution and politics, with that subtle edge of the punk from cyberpunk. So far, if Blomkamp's Elysium was a television series, this would be it. This was probably an influence on that film. Strange to be reading an "older" book that has been updated--this works, but I'd almost prefer to feel the original.

Part 1 was great, complete immersion into Murakami's characters. Putting part 2 and 3 on hold while I dive into some priority reading. Looking forward to the rest.

I thought I knew, but now I know. The "family tree" overview of influence is worth the pick-up. And I need to read Kathy Acker.

This one may demand a full review. Dark, with no shortage of trust for the reader. Still in a bit of a swoon. The characters are alive.

Loses the early stream-poetics, but Nogha slips easily into her whip-smart cyberpunk storytelling--a steady drip of world and character squeezing through the mixture of invention and prose. Sometimes a simple word choice does the work of paragraphs--everything from emotion to environment. It's a masterful and beautiful trick.

Another piece of lost treasure science fiction. Beautiful and dangerous, melting my face off from page one. Perhaps a distant inspiration for The Orange Eats Creeps (Grace Krilanovich)--at the very least, that book's dystopian cyberpunk older sister; perhaps less dream-warped by vaguery, yet equally demanding, rip-jag poetic with spots of lyrical.

Cool thing about Doctorow, this book: when you click on the Goodreads page, there's a button that says, "Read Book." One click and BAM, it's there.

Much better than anticipated. Well-realized world with all those future puzzle pieces on the table. The "memory" aspect hits me square in my sweet spot.

These hardcover collected editions are some of the best money I've spent on books. Through BAD NIGHT and into THE SINNERS, the stories have gotten better and better. With Brubaker own introduction comments regarding Last of the Innocent, it's truly exciting to know there is still 200 pages to go.

The entire creation is "must read" material for anyone interested in sequential storytelling or the crime/noir genres.

Not sure I can enjoy this book any more than I am. Sure, there's a lot left, but I already feel like I've found that elusive thing you hope for every time you open a cover. Can it possibly hold up this well for another 188 pages?

Every once in a while you stumble upon a book that feels as if she was waiting for you all along. It's only been a first kiss, but I'm ready to forget everything, run away with her anywhere she wants to go.

This is hello:
"The whale, the traitor; the note she left me and the run-in with the Post police; and how I felt about her and what she turned out to be--all this you know."

Is it too early to get in line for this movie? I mean, they are already making this, right? And the comic? And the action figures? And maybe cans of spray-blood with the title logo?

I want it all.

As Gibson as Gibson and reads like a lost story from Burning Chrome. Cyberpunk in the first person feminine, but not cutting sharp corners with characters; there's some bite.

So far, the plot, starring in your own manipulated reality, hits a sweet spot of modern context-- and particularly interesting being read just after Fowles' The Magus.
