I don't think I'm going to finish this one. It's good, fascinating, and I am intrigued. But the addition of teenage drama adds a layer of anxiety and distaste to a book that's already difficult.

An intriguing book, right up to almost the end. And then it just fell apart. We discover have been shown nothing relevant to the ending, and in the end are only told. The main character, we suddenly realize, was not naive and boring, but that the author had utterly failed to breathe life into her.

It was nice to spend time in the Cloisters. But in the end, the book called the Cloisters was an unpleasant experience

I don’t care whether that was a conscious choice by the author or an overlooking of a detail beneath her care. That detail matters. Enough to have me leave a book half-finished and walk away from a series at book 14
