"What Aristotle obscured, [Enlightenment thinkers now] see. This conceit of course was, as such conceits always are, the sign of an unacknowledged and unrecognized transition from one stance of theoretical interpretation to another. The Enlightenment is consequently the period par excellence in which most intellectuals lack self-knowledge"

As we crossed Burgundy the next morning...we passed valley towns whose names sounded like a carillon: Montrachet, Pommard, Vougeot, Volnay, Meursault, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Beaune. The nuns, the wine, the lovely courtyards--there were so many extraordinary things to see, and by the end of the day our cups had filled to the brim. By eight-thirty we were back at the Roo de Loo, where we unloaded armfuls of mimosas.

But before going to sleep, [Alyosha] threw himself down on his knees and prayed for a long time. In his ardent prayer, he did not ask God to explain his confusion to him, but only thirsted for joyful tenderness, the same tenderness that always visited his soul after praising and glorifying God
