Dwight Penny is starting Mardi: and A Voyage Thither, Vol. I
I've abandoned Mardi once again. Made it a little further this time, up to the point where he reached Mardi and embarked with some of the locals to look for his missing beloved. The book has veered off into the self-indulgent. It's not that it's an arduous slog like Moby Dick can sometimes be, it's that it's an arduous slog with no great redeeming value.

I’m listening to the audiobook, and very glad that I have chose to do so, for the narrator, the acclaimed, and rightly renowned, George Guidall, so vibrantly and cleverly brings to life the conversations and declamations of the great Knight of the Lions, formerly known as The Knight Of The Woeful Face, and his loyal but irreverent squire Sancho Panza, that I have been entertained now for hours on end.

It was a rental. I read a bit on the plane. Not sure I want to by. It’s a lot,, and more thorough than I’ll ever need.

Swapping back and forth between the Constance Garnett translation on Kindle and the Pevear & Volokhonsky version on paper. What will become of Kitty?

Found first edition hardcover by Charterhouse, 1973 in the laundry room. Gone! Enjoying looking up all the recordings mentioned and listening to them as I go. Definitely giving me an education in be-bop.

Most of the Japanese novels I've been exposed to are a bit weird, stuff that appeals to American literary types -- Mishima, Kobo Abe, even Banana Yoshimoto is odd in her way. Interesting to read a "conventional" contemporary Japanese novel. I hear Higashino is pretty popular, and a lot of his books are made into movies or TV shows.

Nice palate-cleanser, after The Sot Weed factor.

Burlingame's back. The bawdiness is set in strong.

I'm no longer so certain that I've read this before. I can't imagine my younger, less patient self wading through 20 pages of Maryland history as told by an aged and bitter Lord Baltimore. I'm now seasoned by years of exposure to white-papers, so I've plowed on through this time, and now I'm back into the lush playground of bawdy puns. Let Part II begin!
