To be mareish is to be too female. It is to be too much, to carry more than just your body with you. Too reactive, too sensitive, too aware. Too connected in other words, to what’s around and beneath you.

There are a lot of things people don’t talk about, and I never sure if that means they don’t see them or just want to pretend they haven’t.

The honesty of the horses gaze is refreshing, then. She never pretends not to have seen what she has seen.

Elusive is a very good word to describe how this book feels to read. But at the same time there’s an honesty to it. The narrator is confused by her own situation, she doesn’t really know how she is meant to feel because how can you grieve something you never wanted anyway?

You boast of consciousness, but you are not sure of your ground, for though your mind works, yet your heart is darkened and corrupt, and you cannot have a full, genuine consciousness without a pure heart.

So far, enjoying the story although our narrator is a bit naive which is making the pacing a little slower than I’d like.

Can a man of perception respect himself at all?

There in its nasty stinking, underground home our insulted, crushed and ridiculed mouse becomes promptly absorbed in cold, malignant and, above all, everlasting spite.

I’m a few pages in and I see some parallels between Jeckyll and Hyde. Struggling against depravity, what is a conscience?
