I am in love with this book. The connection between animal and human, the difficult feelings around not being a mother and the beautiful introspective writing style

There is a word used to describe mares who are difficult, demanding or unpredictable; mareish…
To be mareish is to be too female. It is to be too much, to carry more than just your body with you. Too reactive, too sensitive, too aware. Too connected in other words, to what’s around and beneath you.

There are a lot of things people don’t talk about, and I never sure if that means they don’t see them or just want to pretend they haven’t.
The honesty of the horses gaze is refreshing, then. She never pretends not to have seen what she has seen.

Elusive is a very good word to describe how this book feels to read. But at the same time there’s an honesty to it. The narrator is confused by her own situation, she doesn’t really know how she is meant to feel because how can you grieve something you never wanted anyway?
