Reread in preparation for the sequel. I'm so happy to be getting a new Amina al-Sirafi adventure!

Genuinely struggling with the idea that anyone out there really believes this book is "fast-paced." I am over here having never slogged a sloggier slog. Also, I hate how Neema's limited POV keeps getting interrupted by the Raven, who seems to exist just to tell us things Neema isn't privvy to. It breaks immersion every time and seems to enjoy spoiling iteself, as the audience learns the reveals before Neema does.

I can't help but feel like this book has no idea what it wants to be, and is sticking its toes in a bit of everything to figure it out.

"Well, the leopards haven't eaten OUR faces yet. I don't know what you're on about." - The residents of Hive, probably.

Currently frustrated with a few aspects, especially as a series closer, but I trust Brett and the process. We'll see how this goes.

Current mood: reading middle grade lit as an adult and yelling YOU ARE TWELVE YEARS OLD FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS CUTE AND FUZZY PLEASE TELL AN ADULT WHAT IS GOING ON!

DNF @ 19%. Can't deal with the male characters overuse of "Mommy." It's creepy and gross. Also figured out at least part of the twist already.
