“Should you really be alone right now?” Shane asked.
“I am not alone,” Ilya said. “You are here now, yes?”
Shane’s hand flew to his chest to make sure his heart was still beating; he could have sworn it had just melted into a gooey puddle.

How Jean’s kind heart had survived a place like Evermore, Jeremy wasn’t sure. It was bruised and bleeding, but it wasn’t broken. Jeremy wasn’t sure if that ache in his chest was pride or grief. Whatever it was, it was hard to breathe around.

“You are very lucky they have me on a leash,” he said in French.

"You are my captain and my partner; that is all I need to know. I will stand with you against them.” ​

​He’d gotten Neil through three weeks at the Nest; dragging Jeremy through one banquet would be easy. Having to behave would be the only difficult part.

“You’re my friend. Just because I don’t talk about my family doesn’t mean you can’t ask.”
​“You are my friend,” Jean returned, testing the way it sounded aloud, “and you don’t want to talk about them. I won’t ask.”

“You of all people should not have to ask.” Jean dug his thumb into Andrew’s wrist and slid it up the length of his arm toward his elbow.

"And I am nothing," Neil prompted. When Andrew gestured confirmation, Neil said, "And as you've always said, you want nothing."

How a man who viewed the world with such studied disconnect could kiss like this, Neil didn't know, but he wasn't going to complain.

"What the hell are your parents into, if you can glide past murder like it's no big deal and get in Riko's face all the time?"

"I hate you," Andrew said. [...] The look he slanted Neil was both unimpressed and unconcerned. "Ninety percent of the time the very sight of you makes me want to commit murder."

"Just promise me this isn't going to be a problem."
"What?" Neil asked.
"I can't tell if you're being obtuse to fuck with me or if you're really that dumb," Wymack said.

Jean hated his lot in life, but he was past the point where he could even think of fighting back. He wasn't a rebel; he was a survivor. He did whatever it took to get through the day.

"You were supposed to be a side effect of the drugs."
"I'm not a hallucination," Neil said, nonplussed.
"You are a pipe dream," Andrew said.

"Andrew," Aaron said, desperate and frightened. He held onto Andrew like he thought Andrew would disappear if he let go.

"Why are you so special?" Matt asked.
"I'm not," Neil said, confused.

If he'd impressed Coach Moriyama he would have grown up at Castle Evermore with Riko and Kevin. He'd be wearing the "3" tattoo that adorned Jean Moreau's face.

*Gritos*

"Jean," he said. "Hey, Jean. Jean Valjean. Hey. Hey. Hello." [...] "I'm Andrew. We haven't met yet."
"For which I am grateful," Jean said.

As he listened to them, Neil realized he was happy. It was such an unexpected and unfamiliar feeling he lost track of the conversation for a minute. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt this included or safe. It was nice but dangerous.

Seth had been a lot of things, most of them unpleasant, but he'd definitely been a fighter. Now he was gone.
