Doug Hocking is on page 30 of 352 of The Last Shootist
I've been distracted with other books, so this is only preliminary. It is a good, solid read and well written. It picks up with the real ending of The Shootist; not the one in the movie, the one in the book. Gillum takes Books's guns and becomes a shootist. This poses much more interesting possibilities than the movie ending. The author, by the way, wrote the script for the movie.

Doug Hocking is finished with Reconnaissance in Sonora: Charles D. Poston’s 1854 Exploration of Mexico and the Gadsden Purchase
Charles Poston was only marginally acquainted with the truth. His Reconnaissance in Sonora may have been an important work, influential in its time, but Poston was less than truthful so often that it's difficult to tell. The author provides important background to the times, the economics and the politics.
