Holy shit, nobody told me this is full of cool pictures, obviously I'm into that and am now ten times more excited than I was when I ordered it. Pretty late to the game but there's a photo of what seems to be a dachshund with a child's head, so I'm just glad to be here at all.

I wish there was an "I JUST GOT THIS IN THE MAIL!!" update for books, because as soon as I open the package i mark them "currently reading." I haven't actually started this yet, it's not that it's on the list so long because I'm reading it super-slow. It's next in the line-up <3

Took a break to think over why this is different than most modern"transgressive/noir" novels;realized it's the lack of Skinner/Watson behaviorist slick&cool observational approach to characters. Ben grabs hold of characters,at the edge of their skin right at the rib cage and yanks up,saying "And look at all this under *here,*" instead of just hinting at the onion. It's honest. Taking a break. My mood is too good to stick with this for now. I love Gaitskill, but it's nearly impossible to absorb/identify with deep character introspection in summer. I shall return to this collection in colder months.

This book is killing me. I'm milking it out because there's no more. If Hemingway and Fitzgerald had a baby in a holler in West Virginia, this is what you get... Makes me work harder, and I love every word.

Started yesterday. Double-checked the shop-vac was in the same place this morning as it was last night.

So it's gorgeous and the story's good, and I keep aahhing over how cleverly it's laid out while contemplating putting it away for awhile for something I don't have to turn upside down. Maybe I'm old-fashioned.Maybe I want the footnotes to hold entertainment value as opposed to mainly functioning to keep me flipping around. Pushing through for now.

How would people in both the pro and con camps regarding DFW feel if i said that, even only this far in, this book is reminiscent of IJ in both format (pieces, multiple narrators, footnotes) and subject matter (filmmaking, perception, dynamics of friends/family)?? I know it is horror-leaning, especially as it moves farther on, just wondering out loud as to whether the feeling of similarity will continue...
