Took a break to think over why this is different than most modern"transgressive/noir" novels;realized it's the lack of Skinner/Watson behaviorist slick&cool observational approach to characters. Ben grabs hold of characters,at the edge of their skin right at the rib cage and yanks up,saying "And look at all this under *here,*" instead of just hinting at the onion. It's honest.
