“As anti-racists, our condemnation should focus on those wielding White power, particularly states, institutions, and structures. We must recognize whose side we are on. We must punch upwards!” - Remi Joseph-Salisbury.

Finally got past Leila Aboulela’s play in this collection, it’s what got me stuck from moving forward in this book lol. It started off so confusing but also I think I wasn’t in the right headspace because it was a lot easier for me to understand coming back to it and it was actually enjoyable enough to finish

Loving this so far. I feel like I’m home even though the topic isn’t a happy one, but I’m reading experiences I deeply relate to

Having gone past the first quarter of this book, I’m glad to have read some better essays, some of which have become favourites. I’m still extremely angry about that essay by arraf though, I’ve been feeling depressed and furious since. It’s made me apprehensive about reading the rest of these pieces.

This book reeks of US imperialism and western bias I’m so disgusted. I’ve just finished reading Jane Arraf’s essay ‘Maps of Iraq’ and she can go to hell. I despise this essay and I’m so angry I’m on the verge of tears. Fuck you jane, US apologist. Fuck. You. So far pretty much all the reporters work / worked for US publications + they’re so biased even though they claim to be neutral. This book sucks.

I don’t like any of the characters so far and I hate when information is purposely left out to be mysterious 😩 hopefully this hooks me in soon
