My first impression of this book was that I liked how skeptically sarcastic it was, especially in combination with it's honesty and clear attempts at remaining as objective as possible. It made me laugh. At first. I had to stop myself at Chapter 7 where we would deliver into the Fast Food Industry. I honestly feel sick from what I've learned so far and you can hear the author struggling with their ethics as you go.

I've decided that I don't like Lady Estora. For all her awareness of her coming power and position she seems to have no considerations for her duties toward her people beyond marrying King Zachary. It's clear to me that while she was taught to be wife, she was not taught how to be a Queen.

There's a word for that, it's called "meddling." It happens when people think that because they serve the king and kingdom they are in a position to dictate the actions of those in superior positions to them because they believe they know what's best. Why is it so complicated? Because. You. Are. Meddling. I'm starting to like these Black Shield, "Weapons." At least they understand discretion and minding their busines

But she's not "shouldering responsibilities" she is running from them. It's hard to bear the weight when you cast it off of you at every turn. Perhaps it is a heavy burden, I accept that. But I do not accept that her shoulders fully bear it up. She didn't ask for this, I know. Still, her self preservation could be sacrificing the lives and survival of many others in her stead. She is avoiding the cost to feel better.

Seriously?! Again? Does she have no sense of honor what-so-ever? What person swears to serve and then ignores all calls to duty that contradict her childish desire for an easier path. You wear the brooch, you use it's power, you took on the mantle. But ignore it when it's inconvenient to you, when it makes you uneasy? You swore an oath! You have a fucking job to do and duty to fulfill. People depend on you! Argh!

I am enormously impressed with the main character's ability to willfully deny the glaringly obvious despite the fact that she has had many encounters which prove otherwise. I understand that she has no desire to be where and who she is. I also understand how easy denial slips into our minds when we would rather be elsewhere doing other things. But this recent event seems to have made her more dense than usual...

"We can now, most days at least, rest easy in the knowledge that we're giving those important things the attention, love, time, and space they deserve. And we can also see that those important things really aren't things at all."

This book has quickly become one of my favorites when it comes to imparting information. The writing style is soothing and informational in such a casual manner that it feels like I'm sitting down with a friend to have an interesting conversation rather than reading a textbook where I have to take notes or look something up for cross reference every five seconds.

I am currently reading this chapter by chapter with a friend of mine. We like to take our coffee or tea in the morning and sit while I read aloud the contents of the book for a bit, then we sit and discuss what we have learned. I admit to some confusion and questions regarding the chapter on S/switches.

So far this book has been a huge relief. I was anticipating the same infodump that other books that I have read so far have provided me, which has often left me both enlightened yet hollow and wondering where exactly I fit in all of this. My studiousness, dedication, and determination has left me feeling like an outcast. Reading the first few pages of this book, however, has rekindled my hope.
