“The extraction abandoned Dolores to be just as she had been before, unprepared to cope with subsequent traumas, which her father therefore would continue to extract.”

Interesting commentary on when we say we wish we could forget things...

This is incredible. I'm not sure I can think of the last book I read that elicited such a strong emotional reaction.

This is going to be interesting. Not sure if I'm going to make it to the end. He's had one or two nice moments of honesty, and he's a phenomenal writer. But...he's not even trying to present both sides, has made some glaring omissions, and drawn some inane conclusions at points. I don't know why I keep picking up books with a political agenda (both sides of the aisle are guilty) and expecting fair material.

I've already fluctuated between being sympathetic for and disappointed in most of the characters introduced thus far. Nice balanced presentation

Dang the movie followed this so closely. Just one more reason to love this story

What are your thoughts on books deemed "must reads" -personally, the last several books I've tried that culture seems to think should be revered have all fell flat. And not, "well darn that was a little too much build up" flat but "did I accidentally read like a first draft written by an illiterate person with the same name" flat. (see reviews on Sedaris "Me Talk Pretty" and Vonnegut "Cat's Cradle" if you want more).

"All that happens must be known" - tagline of one of The Circle's newest products. Sound like our cultural addiction to cataloging everything on social media? I'm going to stinking love this book, though I'm terrified it's going to be 100% prophetic.

[author speaking of 9/11] "Manhattan had always been Ground Zero for us...Bin Laden was not the first man to bring terror to that section of the city."

Wow. You just took 9/11 and made it something to be glossed over so you could focus on wrongs you felt done to you from the past. I'm going to have to force myself to finish this book. Respect lost.
