My sister is living on the streets in LA. A friend gave me this book to help me understand that world.

Still not buying his everlasting soul argument. A masterpiece of philosophical thinking in the BC. Now on to The Republic as I already read and don’t care to endure again The Symposium.

Not getting this. The chapters not distinct, the characters all come over like the same voice; same structure chapter after chapter I can't see, at this point, how this won Booker.

Ok now this is getting to me. There's an awful lot of gangland murdering in this story. Shocking and horrible. Despicable licentious depraved human filth are doing it. Poetically told. Very disturbing.

I figure that if the crazy world of physics is real then the kookiest wacko shit you can think of can be and probably is real in some alt-universe. So yes, I believe in the little ladies. 2.78cm tall.

That the Indian chiefdom of Cahokia (covering the lower half of the Mississippi) existed is a revelation, that it was an advanced society of 15,000 farmers who constructed step pyramids and had mezo-American like religious practices and social structure as early as 800 BC is fantastic and amazing. But there were earlier, much earlier advanced native peoples on this American continent dating back to at least 4000BC.

Truth is that many Spaniards were killed in fierce battles with the Inca.

Pizarro had routed a force fifty times larger than his own, won the greatest ransom ever seen, and vanquished a cultural tradition that lasted five millennia--all without suffering a single casualty.

The ancient pre-Columbus peoples of the western hemisphere (the Indians) were widespread and numerous and brilliant. Then they all but vanished. We now know they were more than what we learned in school and movies and TV. They were a thriving, advanced and diverse civilization.

Finishing a book in less than seven months (Infinite Jest) is going to seem like crackin' open a pistachio and eating it real quick. It'll be yummy only then you'll want to crack open another one right after that and then another after that. So it goes.

Notes and Errata 337. I actually looked up the referenced line in Hamlet that has italicized 'se offendendo'. No wonder this is taking me so long. :- /

I am in awe of Wallace. This passage is magnifique: p.798 "Hal hasn't heard one human voice since he came in. The place's silence has that glittery sound of total silence. His footfalls make no sound on the Dacronyl. He feels furtive and burglarish and holds the NASA glass down at his side and the NA booklet higher up and cover-out as a sort of explanatory I.D. ..."

Hilarious dialogue between Remy and Katherine. Remy spins a real hooter about how he met his comatose wife.

'il ne faut plus qu'il pursuive le bonheur.' He no longer needs to pursue happiness. (because he's dead?). Most translations I found in DFW punditry translate it as thus: 'It is no longer necessary to pursue happiness.' That seems out of touch. I also like 'to hell with happiness'' better. Think smiley face icon with a line through it. Ha.
