I alternate between thinking this is an inspiring journey and wondering why landowners can attract funding for either farming or not farming. It feels a as bit like the adage that you need money (or assets) to make money.

A few chapters in, and it’s a light read with an interesting premise. I’m listening to the audio book and the accents grate a little.

Oh no! Just logging this book here I discover it’s the second in a series. Darn!

Having read a slew of very ordinary books this year, it’s a joy to read something you really want to stay up for

Hmm. The writing style seems very juvenile - all short sentences and repeated names.

Well, I feel like I’m in a lesson and it’s being explained very clearly and repeatedly. I’m sure I’ll get to the end and the words ‘charming’ and ‘life affirming’ will spring to mind, but right now the childlike quality of the writing is a bit unnerving, nay irritating.

Rereading to catch up before Hell Bent

Hmm. The overall plot is intriguing and I want to know more. I’m not sure I’m convinced by the romance, but we’ll see. The writing falters sometimes I think - instances of colloquial modern US language are a bit jarring. The worst is when the main character, who has lived in a floating village tribe most of her life, running for her life through enemy lands, dreams of ‘a comfy bed and endless art supplies’.

Intriguing…

I’m just a little bit bored of all the battles, tbh. Sooo much strategy and tactics. And I’m not a big fan of the main character knowing things we don’t - the big reveal. But I’m powering on through

Abandoned

Abandoned. Not interested in the love interest. Yuck

I’ve had to abandon it because I’m fed up of books where the plucky heroine falls for her super-old, potentially non-human mentor. Yuck

Chapter 15 begins: “I should have left things there…”. She should. I will.

Excruciating exercise in watching a car crash. I’m reminded of Jane Austen, writing of Emma: “I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like”. Well I certainly didn’t like June Hayward. Can’t read any more.

Two pages in and I’m very surprised that it leaps straight in where the last one left off. You definitely couldn’t read this one out of order.
