The time gap between this book and the previous seems...significant. There was a whole romance between one of the main characters and a background character that is referenced by a brief comment. That seems like it should have had more screen time.

So far, this is a homeschooling brochure for the touchy-feely person. May not finish.

The Lord of the Rings
My parents gave me a fabulous, giant, one-volume-with-appendices volume of the Lord of the Rings.
Now I need to figure out what we should do with our volume which is missing the cover and first twenty pages. Suggestions?

Observation: I don't think that Gandalf has a constant, physical form. When Frodo is talking to Gandalf later (I believe in Rivendell, but I'm not there yet, and it's been about five years), he states that he always thought big people were either stupid, or evil. If Gandalf was human-sized, would he say this?
But the humans wouldn't interact with Gandalf the way they do if he was between two and four feet tall.

'"This is no thaw,' said the dwarf, suddenly stopping, 'This is Spring. What are we to do? Your winter has been destroyed, I tell you! This is Aslan's doing.'
'If either of you mention that name again,' said the Witch, 'he shall instantly be killed.'"
As soon as I went quiet after reading those lines, my six year old sister muttered fiercely under her breath, "Aslan."

There's something about reading aloud, one small bit at a time, that makes you start to imitate the way the characters speak even more than reading a novel on your own all at once - especially if you're faking an accent while doing it.

While reading today, I said the word "sledge" and my six year old sister said, "It's
sleigh
." I told her that no, it said sledge - though I didn't know the difference between a sledge and a sleigh.
My nine year old sister said, "The difference is the sledge is what the villains drive," and the heroes drive sleighs. :p

My littlest sister (three years old) was very displeased as I read tonight, asking me, "Why did she [Jadis] call them
slaves
? They aren't slaves!" and insisting to me, "Polly and Digory aren't slaves!"

I'm reading this aloud to my little sisters. Thanks to an old audio recording we used to have of it, I automatically started reading in a British accent. However bad I may be at faking an accent, it's so
right
for this story. xP

However many times I leave one character's POV, so caught up in the moment that I don't want to switch to another character and I don't /care/ what happens to the new POV character, just wanting to go back to the previous one - however many times this has happened in these two books, Brandon Sanderson somehow, remarkably, makes me care by the time we switch POVs again. No other author has been able to do this.
