Fascinating but I feel like I shouldn't enjoy the story

Had to put it down for a bit. I'll try to get through another 300 pages. When does it pull you in?!

I know almost nothing about this country, so it's even more interesting than, say, a Texas would be.

I like this book so far; some authors go too far when setting a book in an older time period, but this one hits the right notes without going overboard.

Reading this in January - I should have read it in December (as I do every year), but got busy this year, and couldn't find the time. It's good at any season of the year.

I don't really like this book, but I can't put it down.

Manages to mention historical figures in a way that makes the reader want to know more. Oftentimes, authors that mention real people have this cringe-inducing way of imagining the things that led to them being famous, like they might have Gutenberg in conversation with a hand-wringing abbot, who says, "Oh, if only there was a way to make the bible accessible to everyone!" This author does not do that at all.

This book has Malone short stories; it's not a novel.
