As most people do, I know about Charles Darwin's theories, but I have never read his work directly. It's interesting to consider when these ideas were new, groundbreaking information from Darwin and Wallace. It's hard to picture a time when humans had much less science based information to access in everyday life.

The only way I can move forward with this book is to not take it seriously. Is this really what people on the "marriage market" think? If so, they all deserve each other, or no one, which seems to be the problem.

Saving this audiobook for times I can give it my full attention. I like the story too much to miss little things to multitasking.

"Research has shown that extended outpatient physical therapy is important to recovering from a knee replacement, but irrelevant after the replacement of a hip."

Just a single example of random facts I have learned from this book. For clarity, I am PRO physical therapy, having found it personally helpful with a number of issues including injury, headaches, bursitis, tendonitis and more. I carry no bias against PT.

"...he fails to see your point." THIS is the stumbling block to making pretty much any of these changes. People can't agree even when there are statistics.

"You can't pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you have no boots."

"Imagine going through something like this almost every day...We can't afford to be blowing up every time we're slighted and ignored. We stand up when we need to, but we have to find a way not to go off every time and still get through the day."

At 15% of the way in, I have to say, I find this author totally realistic so far. That's always a good thing with a non-fiction book that's aimed at "self help", since the reader is supposed to find information and motivation to actually do some of the things in the book. Certainly not one of those look pretty ridiculous books I have read in the past.

"I love that. Being the one that doesn't count. The one who's allowed to see all of Alex. The one that makes him weird" 1/2 way through the book and she is finally addressing what the whole book seems to be about.

This book angers and frustrates me so much that I have been working through it in smaller chunks with lots of breaks for less politically and financially focused reading/listening time.

"Have fun dancing with our enemies!" immediately brought "Have fun storming the castle" to mind.

Ok, the absolutely best thing about this book is having my soapy cilantro experiences validated. I don't mind the taste of cilantro while I am starting to eat something with it, but then I am stuck with the soapy aftertaste for more than 24 hours! No one in my family knew what I was talking about, but this author clearly does, as does her punk coco character.

"I felt like an imposter." There he goes again!

Chasten says he had the feeling he didn't belong in his 1st 2 years of college. I felt that way all the way through grad school. It was actually worse in grad school than it was in undergrad at either the community college or the state Universities.

"I like knowing she can't get away without me knowing" is not something that should be said in a healthy relationship. Really? She can't get out of bed without letting you know she is doing so? I don't think this series, or this author is for me.

1/3 of the way through this book and I am still having difficulty getting into it. It's just not grabbing my interest.

This book is not for me, but I am trying to finish it anyway. I hate leaving books unfinished.

This is comparable in size to War and Peace.

Most, if not all of us here in the US take part in white solidarity. We may not intend to, but we do. Sadly, as usual. the people who need to read this book most won't even consider reading it.

Getting there! Still alternating between mildly interesting and unbelievably boring.

Slowly getting there. Every once in a while, an aspect of the novel grabs my interest for a few minutes. Then, I am back to feeling bored rather quickly.

Chipping away at this one slowly. Unfortunately, I have not found it all that interesting so far. Hoping that changes soon!

From reviews, it seems that people either love or hate this book, with more people loving than hating. I am not in the loving it camp, but not hating the book either. The formality of the time works to make me feel more apart from the story than I would wish, especially when passionate issues are being discussed. The discourse and arguments in the book are interesting, but are somehow still lacking.

"...I'm too tired to write anymore...you don't need to remember or translate...take good care of all of yourselves." Great idea to write a note and share it. I know it's not unique, but this writer shares a lot of great stuff together in this book. Not everything is extreme. Sadly, it's the extremes that the medical world and sometimes world in general focus on most.

"Where-did-this-drama come from?...Oh. I see. Tish is me. My therapist neighbor warns me not to force this limiting narcissistic narrative on my daughter...children are not carbon copies of their parents. To that I say, ok, I see your point, but I also see my daughter lady...I quit trying to make Tish happy or pleasant and decided to just help her be Tish...She is the kindest, wisest, most honest person I know."

"Then Tish was born, and I suddenly understood what was so hard about this."

"While I attempt to both become a human and grow a human at the exact same ridiculous time, I am also teaching 3rd grade."

"...no discipline, and therefore no pride." This coming from a guy who was seriously lacking in discipline most of the time.
