Gripped already. The imagery makes me feel I am there in Bombay and the characters have my interest straight away. Looks like one to settle in to enjoy.

Not sure. Writing appears simple. Shows of strength, partitioned society reflecting a way of looking at ourselves and some love interest. Not deep. Do I continue?

Brilliant. Envy, love, obsession, jealousy, vindictiveness, kindness, humility and more all played out. A range of characters to love, hate, want to poke your finger in to the book and say 'no, don't think that.'

As powerfully moody as Sibelius. His portrayal of how impossible escape is from the bottom of the American Dream. I so want to help Poe and Isaac.

Isaac, Poe and Grace painted so clearly I am already sobbing for them. A great description of despair at the bottom. The imagery of Pennsylvania is so real I feel I can see it clearly through my glasses.

Just started and I defy anyone to put the book down after reading the first chapter. Living on Park Lane New York and seeing your mum homeless on the street. What's going on? How did it happen? Intrigued and ready to settle for a good read!

The book continues to be very open and revealing. I am struck by the self assessment process suggesting he could have done better in many moments of life. Meeting the daughter who did not know he was her father is touching. How relationships develop i also a good description of what happens to all of us.

What a fabulous read. On one level simply daily events about a man going about his life and dreaming of a house. On another it has everything that we humans go through. People we hate being nice to us but with ulterior motives, people close to us sabotaging our agendas but with good reason we don't want to accept. This book bursts with humanity.

I love Julian Barnes flowing prose. The imagery he creates of the story behind a picture are gripping. When you get to the picture at the end of the chapter you go.....wow...never would have thought that!

Thoroughly enjoying as much as the corrections. Franzen has a wonderful way of showing the constant tension of opposites that hit us all the time in life.

Great start. Self deprecating and full of the way he writes his novels. His suggestion that 'The Silver Dish' by Saul Bellow is the best short story ever written does not disappoint. I can already feel the presence of his father in his life and the struggle that brought about.
