scene 2 solidifies the notion that women are possessions of their men: Levine acknowledges Emma and Helena as “your daughters” to Father, Father answers Levine’s question to Mother and shares Emma’s husband’s occupation with Levine before mentioning Emma’s, and Father insists on beating Emma for speaking out of turn despite being a grown woman.

What an incredibly powerful opening scene. The music is so significant and relevant to what transpires, and the action/dialogue does a great job at strongly establishing who Emma is and what we can expect from her character moving forward.

“Tell me your sad-assed story all night. … When you understand, that what you’re telling is just a story. It isn’t happening anymore. When you realize the story you’re telling is just words, when you can just crumble it up and throw your past in the trashcan, then we’ll figure out who you’re going to be.”
