It’s time for a reread.

There are eleventy billion characters introduced early on in Icebreaker and it’s hard to remember who is who, who they like, who they’re sleeping with, who they’re dating.. I could use one of those families tbh.

I’m only on page 72 and this is easily one of the funniest and weirdest books I’ve read in some time.

The moment I read the synopsis of this book I knew I absolutely had to read it ASAP. Plz do not disappoint.

This book takes place in 2002 and our narrators are senior girls. AIM, fanfiction, and Live Journal have factored into the plot and it’s making my millennial heart so happy!

The blurb on the cover implies that The Love Hypothesis is “deeply brainy,” but, ah… so far, it isn’t? I can name many other romances that feel brainier than this.

I’ll never not read a dark academia novel.

In the words of Katherine.. “I am sat.”

A weird quote from this book: “Anyway, Bangor was straight trailer trash: dirty concrete, sneakers with the tongues pulled up, white poor people either really skinny or really fat, self-medicating with drugs or food respectively.” Granted, this character HATES Maine, but wha? Also, this isn’t present time, this is likely.. 2014, I’d guess? Ugh.

I normally don’t read much nonfiction but John Green does such a beautiful job with humanizing facts.

Every time I read an Abby Jimenez book I think about how I would desperately try to befriend her if she lived nearby because I’m convinced she’s very very cool and I want to meet Stuntman Mike.

Maybe I forgot something crucial, but Orie 1) loves reading at the start of this novel, 2) meets Remy, who works in the movie industry and tells her she should write scripts, and now she’s telling her sister she loves movies and wants to change her socials to talk about film. What? Girl.

ANOTHER THING!! Orie keeps quoting Katy Perry and you’re telling me Katy Perry is relevant to a 23 year old who is an influencer? Idk.

One character, Osprey, is afraid of the ocean and has to be forced in because he’s smelly. I’m annoyed by this.

Orie is 23 and she feels like she’s old and is saying things like “delectable’s a word for the olds” and I’m over here confused and wondering if I’ve aged out of new adult or if I just have beef with Orie.

It is unhinged that our main character, Orie, wants to be called Piccadilly on this reality show. She gives no explanation as to why and it’s dropped pretty quickly, but… awha?? I’m 90 pages in and will finish this book because of my love for Survivor, but so far I’m weirded out.

Of course I’m going to read a diving romance.

I’m not a nonfiction girlie but what the hell, let’s try this.

Halfway through this novel, one of our main characters muses their situation is akin to “King Lear and his dyke daughters” and they’re not wrong.

I’m not finished yet, but I’ve decided that Andy Weir is a successful writer when he writes about what he knows, which is middle aged men with a crude sense of humor and science. Let us pretend Artemis was never written *shudder*

One of the most important lessons I learned in grad school is that, when writing, the simplest word is usually best. This book, on the other hand, is inundated with intense, obscure vocabulary. Our narrator is a phd, so I don’t mind some high-level vocabulary choices, but I’m annoyed enough that I might not continue unless the book really hooks me in the next 50 pages.

This book is such a mood.
