Oh this was amazing!! Such a delightful portrayal of 1930s society, but with more scandal and sex than I expected-stuff that would be scandalous even now, and who knew people had sex then? ; ) The old movies made everybody seem so much more chaste. Beautifully told story.

I needed a light, fluffy read and I thought this young adult novel would be fun. But unfortunately it is very poorly written and edited, and the continuity is non-existent. There are too many examples of this to even start showing them here.
I will try to keep reading because I am curious about how it will turn out, but the bad storytelling might detract so much I have to quit.

No. Just no. This book reads like the dreams I have while on Xanax that I am ashamed to talk about to anyone the next day. And the reason why I hate to take Xanax. I need something to read on the way home and that is the only reason I am going forward. But when I get home, I am done with—whatever this is.

Two chapters in and this lady’s son is trash. Total douchebag.

So far these are a lot of people in their forties still invested in their high school social status and it’s resulting drama, which is weird to me. Are people really like that? Because I stopped giving a shit about high school statuses in my early 20s. And I am a little embarrassed that it took me that long.

And I am alone on a train trying not to laugh loudly at this absurdity!

Have to put this one on hold. It’s too dark for my present state of mind ; but it was good so I’ll try to get back to it when things are brighter.

I felt like this book read like a remake of The Stand even before I learned that Joe Hill doesn’t write under his real last name, or who the father is whom he dedicates this book to. (Had I looked at his author photo, I would have known right away, they are the spitting image of each other.)

This book tells the stories of a lot of different people by switching from one story to another, sometimes going decades into the past. Each chapter starts by using only pronouns for whichever characters are being discussed, so you are a few paragraphs in before you know who it's about. A curious device indeed.

I am done. This book jumps around too much. It also references too many other books and poems. I feel like I need to reference an entire thesis bibliography just to keep up.

I don't get why she just didn't tell her husband she didn't want that guy to kiss her. What kind of monster would be mad at his wife because a guy forced himself on her?

Now a character's name has changed from Penny to Patty. I know this is just a fluff novel, but how drunk was the editor?

The author has written "vagrantly" when she meant "flagrantly" and the editors let her. Oh dear.

Oh, come on. I thought the played-out plot device of sudden, unexpected windfall of riches was bad enough. The response to the disaster is just laughable.

Shit, this book is dark. Even beside the end-of-the-world stuff.
