The plot of this book is useless and dull, but the commentary is so incisive that it’s worth the read anyway.

Very oddly structured, little suspense, but the way these people talk, man. It’s enough to move the most dispassionate person.

reading this whole collection because I recently reread The Frolic and couldn’t get enough. That short story remains one of the freakiest things I’ve ever read (though it is entirely eclipsed by It, which is pure evil on paper).

Edith Wharton lives in the highest echelons of my literary saints; what a writer!

On this read, I have pieced things together and realized this literary hero of mine is a massive misogynist. Does this degrade the message at all? Yes, I’d say it does. Before this reread I’d discovered that Orwell informed on people he suspected as communists, which already gave me pause. While many of his insights are just as wise as the first time I read them, he isn’t a prophet to me anymore.

I had this book recommended to me while looking for fantasy in the vein of The Lies of Locke Lamora, and this was an insane pull in that regard. I was not expecting all the sex (maybe I should have been, given the cover), but I’ll be damned if this isn’t getting very good.
