words cannot express how personally challenging I am finding it to read this.
I am equal parts frustrated and bewitched by Nabokov’s heady prose, and, besides, completely uninterested in the plot.
It’s been like a month of trying to read this at every interval and I have not been “sucked in” once. It’s just me running up against stodgy sentences and chipping my teeth. Seeing the forest for the trees etc

This is so good and so fucking hard to read. NOT an eyes skate over the page sort of book.

Reading for thesis. More trite than I’d hoped, but with an intelligent voice.

Christ, how bleak. I am still the young and idealistic, Markson the old and pragmatic. I see him as my elder; if he is so defeated, I must be also.

Stephanie Garber never ever writes anything of substance. All action and description. Reading is just being pulled along a line towards her destination (FMC & MMC kissing). Her characters make nary an observation about the world. The books feel like empty little shells. Not a great writer. Maybe not even a good writer. But she sells!

Took this from a free bin at the airport. Thank you, free bin at the airport. I am to read the Republic for school, and this gives me great insight into Socrates’ mind and mores. I especially like his musings on death, though I can see why everyone found him so deeply annoying

I keep getting fooled by people saying this book is good. I mean, I’ve certainly read worse, but good? I have to stop telling romantasy people that I like fantasy. It’s NOT the same.

reading this just because. in a world where everything is an obligation, including the books I read, it’s so wonderful to do something just because

The plot of this book is useless and dull, but the commentary is so incisive that it’s worth the read anyway.

Very oddly structured, little suspense, but the way these people talk, man. It’s enough to move the most dispassionate person.

On this read, I have pieced things together and realized this literary hero of mine is a massive misogynist. Does this degrade the message at all? Yes, I’d say it does. Before this reread I’d discovered that Orwell informed on people he suspected as communists, which already gave me pause. While many of his insights are just as wise as the first time I read them, he isn’t a prophet to me anymore.
