I'm struggling with this one and am not sure how much of it is me (am I being a lazy reader?) and how much of it is the structure. I feel like you have can either "alternating then and now" or "two narrators" but having both in the same book is just not working.

I have never hated a villain protagonist as much as I hate this guy. I mean, I'm supposed to, he's a bad guy, but I loathe him to the point that I wish he were a character in ASoIaF so that Ramsey Bolton could skin him.
