No Goodreads reading-challenge target this year because I found I was selecting short, easy books in order to get the numbers up. This year, I want to read some of the classics that I've missed. They tend to be longer and more arduous than modern novels so I wanted to be free of the numbers pressure. I'm jumping right in with Eliot's Middlemarch as it has been so warmly reviewed by so many of my GR friends.

So...300 down, 600 to go. Or not! Because this book, dare I say it, is just rather boring. The Cromwell of previous books was quick-witted and charming but this one has the whiff of pompous old fart about him. Now, perhaps this was Mantel's intention - pride before a fall, and all that - but life feels a little too short for this long-winded book. Perhaps I shall return to it at some point.

Mmm! This is a bit hard-going.

Struggling a bit with this to be honest. It's not the book. My concentration is not so good at the moment. I suspect you know the feeling!
