I’m a large fan of the boom so far. Of course, it’s not a “definite” history of the Goth scene worldwide, but it’s one of the only books I’ve read about Goth culture that shows an actual evolution of that we now know as Goth. Books discussing goth post punk will often place the reader in media res of a goth scene that is already formed; this book shows a visual transformation of goth from its punk roots.

I'm still trying to gather my thoughts on everything I've read so far but I'm really enjoying the book.

So this is actually my third time reading the book but I wanted to put my thoughts and ideas into written form.

I still really enjoy this book but this book definitely isn't for anyone who's new to punk/post-punk.

It took a while to really understand the structure of the book but once you get the structure down it flows really well.

Okay I’m getting to the end of this and I am very conflicted on Tim Gunn’s fashion sense.

I really appreciate this semi-light read. It has enough new information that I enjoy each chapter but it’s light enough that I can get the basics without going into theory

Looking more into faith and I enjoy reading this so far. Yes, it’s more background information than actual recipes so far but it’s nice to know the context behind the food we eat

Wanted a somewhat light read for the end of the year. Reading this gives me a lot of inspiration for fashion but for learning about new designers and styles

So the “incident” itself sounded absolutely horrific but the description of the pictures afterwards was fucking horrible. Maggie (my favorite character) at least tried to help her a bit but she still managed to show her whole ass in dealing with this situation.

Okay, I’m only a few dozen pages into the book and I’ve realized one thing: Emma O’Donovan is not a very likeable character. She’s shallow, materialistic, and is one of those people that puts herself up by putting others down. I have a hard time emphasizing with people like her but it doesn’t excuse what’s going to happen to her.

This book definitely had a slow burn in the beginning (due to the lack of action) but it’s picking up nicely. I still don’t like Cedar though

I think the initial thing I noticed about the book is that the paragraphs are dense. Very dense.

And almost none of these characters are likeable. Cedar seems like she’s still going through a teen angsty phase even though she’s 26 years old and her parents seem so suspended from reality that it makes them unlikeable. The only characters I can really like are her biological parents, who seem more like genuine people.

I initially took a break from this book but now I’m back

After what seemed like the longest break ever, I finally started reading this book again. I feel like West Africans have a distinct writing style that takes a little getting used to but I love he world building that Nnedi Okarafor has done
