I like the prose in this book, sometimes. (("...brown and graceful" ? I'm so very tired and I wish non-minorities could understand.)) I don't like how easy/predictable the vast majority of this is, though. Caught in a faerie war? Tell your troubles to your best friend! Why not tell your whole band! Is there a traitor in your ranks? It's probably the mysterious character! Obvious rival love interest was obvious.

Already know I'm taking a full star off for unnecessary slur usage. This book came out when I was 1 year old, around the same time as Labyrinth, I believe. There's a note in this edition dated for year 2000. Do better.

"Jesse and I don't look that much alike" - leading male character
"Come on, you're a Native American, he's a Native American." - lead male's ex-wife

Nothing like a good dose midwestern racial fetishism. Just once I wanna read a nice romance with a native leading male that isn't fetishized or elsewise Othered.

Of course he isn't 100% Shawnee. No, we can't have that. *eyeroll*

Nit-picking, but does the author know North America has cougars and *not* black panthers? Those are nowhere near Shawnee territory. Pretty sure they're rainforest creatures.

I want to like this book. Charity is making that incredibly difficult for me.

I take it back. Chastity gets into circumstance after circumstance; a complete damsel in distress and a right idiot. I still like Meechee though.

Charity is an idiot, but more sufferable than most, I guess. At least this author isn't comparing him (much) to animals and repeatedly mentioning how not-white he is. I rather like Meechee.

I GREATLY wish the author had not chosen to toss around words like "savage" and "squaw" so insensitively. They're not used extensively, but honestly WHY? Also, Julie and Gray are unicorns. I'm so conflicted.

I think the grey in Lydia's house is her mother.

I am slightly reminded of a scene from "You Who Came From the Stars" here, in a good way.

Elijah, and I shall be calling him Elijah, is obviously going to be an important character, although I get the feeling not in the way typical to YA books. I could be wrong, but something feels off about him and that whole meeting.

First impressions: the introductory pages have an ambiance deliciously similar to the movie The Mummy. This is a lovely start. Also, I can already see this book is a history-geek must! Probably for geography geeks too.

Just got this in the mail and I can't wait! I won this copy in a Goodreads giveaway, shipped directly from the author (thanks!) and I am totally stoked to start this!

I don't like Rachel at all. Pushy, manipulative, and full of self-entitlement. She's no better than Eve; the only difference is Josh is older now.

Quit. 70% of the book: "The need. The need. THE NEED." 20% of this book: "I'm a special snowflake and FOREVER ALONE." 10% of this book: "This guys kinda hot. I can kill him but I won't 'cuz then we can't sex."

That awesome moment when you have three new books and don't know which to start first.

Barrons is part fae. Suspected since his introduction/effects of his presence, feeling confirmed with his abstaining from touching the one thing that can kill any fae. Not impressed with V'lane.

You know what's bad about really great books? They intensify your diappointment in ordinary reads. And this book's pretty standard of the past decade's trends: blonde protaganists who don't curse, lust for the color pink, and think they're holier-than-thou for things about themselves they deem 'counter-culture'. Ugh. Love interest seems to be a hodgepodge of other cliches that don't mix well.

Really unsure if I'm gonna spend time on finishing this. Definitely disappointed on various levels and sad, because I'd been hungrily waiting to read this. Also, it's painfully obvious that this is a series starter and not a standalone; I dislike that in general. IMO: even series-starter books should be functional as a standalone. I.E. third parties like Hazmats exist only for another book and Cole/Justin drama.
