Why does he use so many clichés? It has to be deliberate but it's flippin' annoying

Mind-blowing book. The author has a great command of language and knows how to select a revealing anecdote. It explains a lot to me, the reason why the Americans interfered so much in Italian politics. Having seen how Stalin took advantage of the ending of the war to invade a significant pirt of Europe, they were terrified the Communist party would take over. In that, they were at one with the Vatican.

I've slowed down reading this. I know I'll be heartbroken when it's finished.

It adds new meaning to the phrase a heavy read. I've weighed it: two and a half pounds! Very hard to read in bed.
