Omg. I am enjoying this SO MUCH

Reading this aloud to my partner. Such a pleasure to read aloud, even though I've never read it before. The prose is so fluid and his grasp of tropes so strong that characters' voices become clear very shortly before they're introduced, and it's easy to know what tone should be adopted in a given scene. The story's pretty great too, of course, if not anything new.

Love this play so much. Still reading it in some sense, as I'm acting in it right now, but I've finished it a bunch of times at this point.

This took longer than I imagined; Mieville is dense as hell even when writing for kids. But I found the queering of the traditional hero/quest narrative delightful, and I also took note of his rare ability to refuse to gender a character, and yet also avoid writing a single awkward sentence about that character. Fun stuff.
