David O'Connell is finished with American Spy
I was initially excited to read this book, and the back story and beginning were interesting, if not exciting. I finished it out of commitment, rather than the thrills or terrific writing. Now, a year later, the story is vaguely remembered. I’m too old to read books that are vaguely remembered.

Getting to be a real slog, with a soppy romance in Chad combined with another developing in the White House, with adolescent angst thrown in for good measure. Spying and geopolitics appear to be an excuse for a book, rather than a story. Putting it down for a while.

I am having a very difficult time with this book. There is a lot of technical detail about "things," but not a lot of nuance about the characters, who appear to be colored either very scrubbed, clean, dedicated "Americans," of a military bent, and very black-hat bad guys, with an evil genius running the show.

The plot, while incredible, does have possibilities, with the apparent kidnapping of an American POTUS

After starting to read this, I quickly realized that I had read it before.

Just started and rocketing my way through. It seems to be more tightly written than Kerr's last few books; this is somewhat of a flashback to the March Violets tense noir style that got him going for me.
