I didn’t love it. Long and short, the voice did not resonate with me, though the idea for the book is brilliant

In a lot of ways, I hate this book. I detest the writer. I feel her approach to backpacking is reckless and offensive. But also, I just started and I know I’ll read it quickly, all the way through.

Best of Larry brown to this point. Less gore, more suspense.

This is the book never ends...

Funny that I used to love Dreiser so much. He’s not doing much to retain my favor with this one, yet

Certainly dated in a number of ways, though still worth reading. One of my biggest criticisms is how masculinity (gender) remains tied to sexuality, which is somewhat addressed in the text. There is, however, a complete blindness toward bisexuality.

I don’t read a lot of mysteries, but if they were all so well done, I might! Brought it on a camping trip with me this weekend, and it was perfect (outsdoorsman in the Ukraine winter).

Aj is reading Evolution's Rainbow: Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People
Roughgarden has some damn intense ideas about psychology—this coming from a licensed mental health professional with a very strong distaste for the medical model. She’s strong on the hard science, which isn’t shocking because she is a scientist. She’s more shoddy on the “soft science.” I guess all those qualitative/quantitative divide discussions apply here. She’s not wrong about historical abuses, though

A wealth of knowledge in this tome. The writing style is not very friendly, but it’s worth working through
