Listen, I know I've complained before about slow burn books going too fast, but I was just tempting fate. This book might be a burn too slow even for me.

I'm enjoying the premise and set up but it's really tripping me up that the tense and POV are written like a Wikipedia article.

Absolutely loving Clara. She's that great mix of intelligence and pragmatism, while also being a bit hotheaded and shoots out insults before thinking. That's my favorite recipe for a character.

I hate to say it after I loved the first book so much but I am very much whelmed

I'm not going back now I'm powering through but heed my warning - definitely should've re-read the last book before diving into the finale. I forgot this is one of those series with like 800 characters all of varying allegiances, so I keep forgetting who is allied with who and what exactly they want. The only thing I didn't forget is my love for Xiala and Iktan.

I’m realizing a couple of things with these later expanse books. #1 - books 1-4 had much more of a horror element that’s all but gone now. And #2 I find the belter/sol/Martian conflicts and politics waaay more interesting than the standard sci-fi politics of “ragtag group of rebels vs evil empire” that the last books have been about.

DNF'd, but then decided to pick it back up again and give it 50 or so more pages

i keep having the experience with fantasy books where it's the same POV for the first several chapters and i get VERY invested in it, and then there's a sudden POV switch and start to loose interest. i can feel it happening NOOOOO

Mari has very intense anxiety and PTSD, and it kinda just seems like her mom's solution to that is to just...tell her to relax, give her some tea, and make a therapist deal w/ it. An extremely realistic response, but I sympathize w/ Mari.

I'm so torn on this book b/c I feel like the actual horror elements and addiction stuff is not done well at all, but everything else is really interesting. The addiction thing is complex, cause it all seems to be put on her desire for weed and the percocet addiction is swept under the rug basically....but also like...I'm on Mari's side with the weed lmao but I don't think as the reader we're "supposed to be."

Ok so I can already tell based on the writing that this is one where ppl either hate the writing or love it...but I have to say it works soo well for this type of book. I feel like I'm sitting around the dinner table, shooting the shit and listening to a cousin tell stories about people she met.

This ultimately doesn’t matter to the story but I’m so confused logistically how this game works lol. So it’s a card-based game but it’s also VR so it requires physical activity, and a lot of players are willing to watch tournaments and also there’s no grinding it’s just searching for cards. I’m picturing like an Xbox Connect game 😂
