This is so darn fun! I had to give myself a very Stern Talking To to put the book down on this work night. 😅

I got the other Elizabeth Elgin in the mail that I wanted to read more so switching to that one.

The relationships are rather lopsided in this marriage. Arthur v. John too. I’m sure it will all come right but it is a bit odd now.

“…at breakfast, she extended the invitation to Master Wesendonck, who was trying to cut all the white away from a poached egg, leaving the pure yellow center on its piece of toast” (85).

Thirkell’s descriptions of what quirky little boys do are so hilarious. I think she had three or four boys herself so she clearly knows. 😂

Whew, the end of ch 17 is FASCINATING!! The historical context around the Munich Agreement and its effects is intensely complex and the author explores that brilliantly in the final five pages of the chapter. This line at the end: “Hitler declared, ‘Our enemies are small worms. I saw them in Munich.’ It was a miscalculation the consequences of which would be felt across the entire world” (296).

Drawn right in! Already so many great Shakespeare references! I love that I pick up on more of them now than I used to.
