For all that Avelyn is educated, I don't think he's very intelligent.

By about 10 pages in I was in love with this, and wanted to update, but may have been a scooch too busy reading it instead

Why are we wasting so much time on this parade? And by we I mean the reader and the narrative, not the characters. I know why they're doing it: they're kinda useless anyway.

It's all just simplistic human politics and very average space battles so far, nothing much about the massifs. Hope the rest is not like this.

This is really a bizarre mix of world building styles. I'm both annoyed and fascinated. Also the main character has even more Hot Takes that I can't wait to be confused about/rant about in my review.

After the first two chapters nothing is making sense, and it's not making sense in a "huh???" way rather than an "oh this is interesting" way. Also, wishing you didn't have to eat meat because, of all reasons, you think rats look like humans is... a hot take.

This is hilarious and I want to respect that Jenny ain't a marrying woman but also I kind of want to marry her.

It's not bad, but it is slow. Don't pick this one up if you're looking for anything other than lovely prose.

Wanted to pick up something less depressing than the other book I'm reading right now...did not succeed with this one.

Let's see if I actually finish this one. Not because it's slow, or long, but just because it's so sad.

Whelp, by the end of part 1 the only character I like is Chloe, the ex-wife that all the other characters are hating on.

Yes I've been burned by this author before, but whoever writes her blurbs is really good at their job so I'm back again for round 2, I guess.

Yay! I love it when protagonists don't stand up for themselves and get swept along by the narrative like useless puppets! My favorite!!!

Wow these people are awful but the prose is delicious

Do I have a bunch of half-finished library books that need to be returned soon enough that I'm not sure I'll have time to finish them? Yup. Do I regret starting this one instead? Nope.

The characters keep insisting they've been on the ship for days, but no one has slept and it really feels to the reader like a couple hours. Confusing.

On the other hand, I love how this book unequivocally paints ai as a bad thing.

Update, I did some googling, and I was wrong. In edge cases that can be how CO2 poisoning works. I was thinking of carbon monoxide. Oopsies.

I do love stories about isolation. And space. And deep dark winter.

That being said, I don't think this book is quite as clever as it thinks it is, and Harper is the single most useless commander I've ever met.

I'm already editing this in my head.

Unappealing characters, redundant sentences all over the place, more high school drama than premise. Clines has a lot of work to do to turn this around for me.
