Wow these people are awful but the prose is delicious

Do I have a bunch of half-finished library books that need to be returned soon enough that I'm not sure I'll have time to finish them? Yup. Do I regret starting this one instead? Nope.

The characters keep insisting they've been on the ship for days, but no one has slept and it really feels to the reader like a couple hours. Confusing.

On the other hand, I love how this book unequivocally paints ai as a bad thing.

A little slow to start, and I keep forgetting that I'm often immune to horror and getting mad at the book when that's really on me

Update, I did some googling, and I was wrong. In edge cases that can be how CO2 poisoning works. I was thinking of carbon monoxide. Oopsies.

I do love stories about isolation. And space. And deep dark winter.

That being said, I don't think this book is quite as clever as it thinks it is, and Harper is the single most useless commander I've ever met.

I'm already editing this in my head.

Unappealing characters, redundant sentences all over the place, more high school drama than premise. Clines has a lot of work to do to turn this around for me.

I know I was lukewarm on the first book, but I got suckered in by this title and what can I say, so far it's flowing well

This book is a mix of fascinating talks with experts and newitz's own vague, grand, unsubstantiated and unprovable claims. It's a little bit heartbreaking.

Oof, you can tell Newitz is an opinion writer, and honestly I'm not loving it

Unrelatedly, ancient Egypt wouldn't have worked if the Nile was toxic. Weirdly that's what's threatening my suspension of disbelief the most in this book. Not the zombies. Or the universe-hopping.

Halfway through. I take back a little of how mean I was earlier. But only a little.

We've got school (again) going in one place, and an irrelevant, over-the-top competition going in another...Islington I thought you were better than this.

This is amazing?? Why did I only give book 1 three stars??

This reads like Brothers Grimm or the old Andrew Lang fairy tale books...very nostalgic, I love it.

This book can't decide if it wants to be Kushiel's Dart or Lord of the Rings, which is just a bizarre combination.
