we are shaped by the luck of the draw, the circumstances in which we grew up and the education we received. But we all have two sets of very powerful tools that we completely control: our eyes and our ears. Watching others, listening to their advice and reading about people are three of the best things I ever did.

A wise man once was asked to speak about friendship. And he answered, saying:
Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger, and seek him for peace.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not not would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love.

The Intellectual dimension is the rational, conscious, cognitive, wide-awake part of us. We’ ll call it the “ I Think.” This is the part that learns information, remembers facts and figures, and sees the world in a black-or-white, cause-and-effect manner. Most of our education is directed toward this part of us.

Carl Rogers, the father of modern-day non-directive counseling, has helped many of us discover the power of listening and understanding people. He believes that your greatest power to help people facilitate change in their own lives is to listen non-judgmentally and give unconditional acceptance to them. In the act of understanding others we facilitate their growth We take away barriers and give them freedom to grow.

Homeschooling doesn’t come without its challenges. The National Education Association recently weighed in, saying that it “believes that homeschooling programs based on parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education experience.”20 Some are also concerned that homeschooling stunts socialization. And of course there’s the matter of cost, which can be anywhere from a few thousand dollars.

Assessment should not be seen as the end of education, in either sense. It is an essential part of the whole process and should interweave naturally with the daily processes of teaching, learning, and curriculum development. It should be an integral but supportive part of the ordinary school culture. Getting that balance right is one of the roles of school leadership.

If the system doesn’t work, don’t blame the people in it. Work with them to change it so that it does work. The people who are best placed to make the change are those who, in the right conditions, can have the most impact on the quality of learning: the teachers.

There are three cultural priorities for schools: to help students understand their own cultures, to understand other cultures, and to promote a sense of cultural tolerance and coexistence. To achieve these objectives, schools need a broad-based, rich curriculum, not a narrow, impoverished one. The standards movement doesn’t begin to engage with these complexities.

Alternative Education: programs that are designed to reengage young people who are either failing in school or have pulled out of it altogether. Often these alternative education programs have spectacular results.

Singapore, another high-performing system, has conducted a visioning exercise as to what knowledge and skills, beliefs and attitudes, and social-emotional competencies young Singaporeans will need to be prepared for a global future (Singapore Ministry of Education, 2010).
