Realized something about me with this book. She’s being left secret messages in her bookstore. They’re folding down a page corner and highlighting a line in the book. Me over here cringing when I read the corner is folded down. Yeah, so maybe I’m a big book nerd. Pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to be the takeaway with this scene.

Finished the second novella the assassin and the healer. Each novella seems to be showing how Celaena goes against type. In this one, her helping Yrene like she did even though she seemed resistant at first once again is displaying her empathy for others. Also perhaps not the last time we meet Yrene.

First novella done. I am guessing each of these novellas have a point to them. To introduce us to Celaena or see her backstory but also to show something about her core character. The first one with the Pirate Lord is likely showing us even though Arobynn has raised her since she was 8, she has her own moral compass. She basically ends up disobeying him and bringing Sam along for the ride. Will see how that turns out

We’re just now getting into the modern timeline story of Georgia and Noah. Meanwhile the WWII storyline is chugging along. Still undecided on this book.

I’m having a harder time than I expected getting into this book. Maybe it’s the alternating timelines? I always have a rough go with those

So Celaena going after Grave was interesting. She is showing her assassin side. Her rift with Chaol will not be fixed I fear. But in an interesting side note, she’s rekindling her friendship with Dorian. I like that. And of course Dorian has his own demons right now with his newly emerging magic. Last 100 pages coming up soon!

Also, Georgia’s mother is awful!!

Okay. Kind of a banger right out of the gate. Because Noah Harrison?? Yeah TOTALLY a facsimile of Nicholas Sparks - writing wise at least. And Nicholas Sparks is NOT A ROMANCE WRITER. Basically I ADORE Rebecca Yarros for this right now!!! The way Georgia described his novels?? Chefs kiss baby

So Nehemia. Wow. I think she knew this was going to happen to her and went into knowing this because she thought it would spur Celaena to finally stop thinking for herself and think about the greater good. My guess is that this is the turning point. Celaena will finally claim her title and start the war against the king. She needed to think beyond herself and think on a larger scale. But wow.

This week's TBR winner from my socials. From what I've heard, I should be prepared to be destroyed. We'll see.

So a "relationship" but keeping it secret. Hmm. Also, she has someone trying to sabotage her. I am pretty sure I know who it is and why he's doing it (starts with Nor and end with man). He wants Dot to come back but how unfair to Jeanie!!

Sooo anyone think Celaena is awfully naive and trusting for a supposed super duper assassin?? Also it’s oh so obvious she’s the missing princess of Terrasen. These must have been early books for Maas because she’s more obvious with her “hints.” Also Archer is 100% lying. Not sure on what yet. And Roland is going to use Dorian’s jealousy to his advantage. Way to telegraph everything Dorian.

Always love the resistance part of the story. The part where he can’t stay away but also lies to himself and says he’s not really interested in her. Sureeeee. Also the people and this town are utterly charming in this book.

Gah I love love love grumpy x sunshine. So excited for this.

The candy and the red teeth? So funny. Also the prince getting all awkward and shy when she kissed him on the cheek was funny. Sooo his playboy thing is actually a protective act for court me thinks. Also not falling for the Nehemia red herring. I bet those marks under her bed were from Nehemia but for protection. Also now we know Nehemia knows a lot more about wyrdmarks than previously thought.

I keep coming back in my head to that ring the Duke wears. And Celaena talking about the “master” watching while the monster sharpened its claws and attacked. And then the segue to the kennels and hunting dogs made me think. I think I have a theory. An evil type of shapeshifting involving Cain with the ring using to control it. The kills help strengthen Cain I think. Something old and uses the wyrdmarks.

The way I cannot stand Roman’s father!!

Heh. Prindle and Forest. Didn’t see that coming but good. Maybe he’ll get off Iris’ back now

Okay so we have a mystery!! Figure out the evil and eliminate it. Also getting total magic vibes off Calaena. And where exactly is the king??? Seems sus because Chaol also said he didn’t take any of the guards he picked. So a roving monster, evil to eliminate, potential magic, potential love triangle (Dorian and Chaol), and suspicious king activity. Did I get it all??

Maas keeps trying to suggest a potential romance between Calaena and Dorian. Not buying it. Nope. It just seems too easy and too convenient a plot line. Also I think, Dorian almost looks to her like a prize to be won. Not super attractive.

So far I like Calaena, think Prince Dorian has something that could be good but he strikes me as selfish and a user, and I think Chaol is honorable and likely to be someone I like. Also the Prince mansplaining to the Princess Nehemia on how to spar legit made me laugh out loud. Hope she kicks his ass.

I love how Iris is so dogged and unwilling to give up. Roman’s father is awful but she was basically like yeah you can put that in your pipe and smoke it. But she would fight to the ends of the earth for Roman. I love it. Things are getting tense for Roman now. It worries me.

Her making me laugh. She sat in Roman’s lap for a three hour drive over hella bumpy ground and noted he seemed almost pained. And couldn’t figure out why. Girl. We know why!!! lol

Ack don’t want to spoil anything!! But I’m at the part where Iris is looking through the binoculars at someone in the field and y’all I immediately squealed. Okay yeah enjoying this book. Also loving the letters back and forth. Apparently I enjoy this format

This book was the TBR Game winning book from my socials this week. So far I am finding this book interesting. It flows well, I like the characters, interesting world. But there is something - almost a detachment in the way the characters experience this with us. I feel like it's on purpose because of the life they're living and it works. Sounds odd how detached writing would work but it does for this material.

There’s something about the FMC I do not care for at all. Maybe it’s the fact she’s supposed to be good at her job but is thrown off by such simple normal things.

So a ton has happened. I really am enjoying the tight friendship between Gwen, Emerie, and Nesta. Nesta has some moments but she’s actually becoming more open and feeling her emotions instead of shoving them down until only anger erupts. Of course we learn that her and Cassian were mates - called that - and Nesta did not react well. Now they’ve been forced into the Blood Rite. Yikes.

I'm struggling with this one. It's both a combination of the FMC and the style of the writing when speaking in her voice. Also, this work environment is supposed to be funny but all I can see if holy hell, this is toxic as F.
