i reread the first one in 2019 and then forgot to reread the rest so i am doing this again. i think ive read #1 maybe....over a dozen times, and #2 probably almost as much. so this is comfort food. i love he (max mcdaniels)

especially heinous 4.5/5 - because i've never seen law & order svu, i didn't fully get this. but i have listened to a lot of welcome to night vale and the magnus archives, and i loved the flavour of this

i am losing my fucking mind

trying again...but i cannot get over how literally nothing happens? the amount of useless descriptions. the sheer number of epithets! just use the characters' names. im stupid, i don't know who "the black-robed necromancer" is, and it is particularly hard to remember when both characters in this scene are wearing black.

nevertheless i am persisting bc butch lesbian protags are a functionially extinct species

quarantine reading is going very poorly...

i dont have the time to read this whole book so...am i just rereading my favourite parts? maybe so. quite possibly. yes.

Written by a Tory and it shows. But I'm getting what I wanted out of this, I think, i.e. an evaluation of various accounts of Thatcher's life in order for me to develop my own opinion of her and of the UK Conservatives.

"Insulated from natural contacts with earth, air and sunlight, by corsets pressing on the solar plexus, by voluminous petticoats, cotton stockings and kid boots, the drowsy well-fed girls lounging in the shade were no more a part of their environment than figures in a photograph album, arbitrarily posed against a backcloth of cork rocks and cardboard trees."

- how NOT to introduce world-building elements
- i don't care about the male protag one iota
- the female protag is promising though
- I'm just bored enough to keep reading

There are a few things i absolutely love about this book. Lyra and Pantalaimon, how they’ve changed over the years, their struggle with that weird and terrifying stage of young adulthood. And how the long-term implications of the events of His Dark Materials are tied up in that.

But there are other things I...utterly loathe.

So I’m taking a breather from this for a while. To reflect.

There are a few things i absolutely love about this book. Lyra and Pantalaimon, how they’ve changed over the years, their struggle with that weird and terrifying stage of young adulthood. And how the long-term implications of the events of His Dark Materials are tied up in that.

But there are other things I...utterly loathe.

So I’m taking a breather from this for a while. To reflect.

I have been utterly misled into reading what I thought was a balanced account. No, just a neoconservative defence of islamophobia and Western colonialism. Ah well.
