"My beloved," Ilya murmured, in Russian.
"So beautiful."
Shane let his eyes close for a moment, letting Ilya know he understood. Ilya couldn't hide behind his native tongue anymore when he wanted to be sweet and soft. It was something Shane had worked for; while Shane's teammates were playing poker or games on their phones on the plane, Shane was studying Russian.
"Enough," Shane said, also in Russian.
"I'm ready."

Every now and again, Ilya would kiss Shane's jaw, or his throat, or, one time, the tip of his nose.
Ilya couldn't believe what he had been reduced to. He was...infatuated. It was disgusting.

There was something a little too...tender...in the way Rozanov was looking at him. And there was something that was far too soothing about the way Rozanov's fingers combed through Shane's short hair, and curved down to trace the bridge of freckles that stretched across his face.

"That's why I love the thought of resonance and want it so badly. I want to be that perfect ONE for someone. I want to be their soulmate. I want them to look at me and realize 'Oh, Penny is that special someone I've been waiting for all along."

My track record is terrible. I've always been all-in with relationships. I love the idea of being in love, but in the past, I've always been the one that loved more in the relationship. I've always been the giver, the pursuer, the one that changes.

Do I dream of resonating to her? It is a foolish question.
It is my only dream.

"No commitment. No mating. Just having fun in the furs. No hearts involved."
S'bren shakes his head. "It is already too Late, Penny. I lost my heart to you long ago."
I sigh, because that's sweet and romantic and so, so not the thing I wanted to hear.
"Oh, S'bren."

If I cannot have Angie as a mate, I will provide for her in the only way I can.
I am dedicated to her and so I must keep her safe, warm, and happy even at my own expense. I do not mind, though.
The more tired I am, the less my thoughts turn to her. When I do not think of Angie and her soft smile and warm skin, my heart does not ache so badly I want to tear it from my chest.
So I hunt.

Eventually, he reaches out and touches a fingertip. "Does...this pain you?"
How cute. Is that why he thinks I'm holding it out to him? I decide to have a little fun. "It's a greeting. Like this one." I raise my hand in the air and wait.
"Gimme five."
"Five what?" He blinks at me, the prettiest, most confused man on the beach.

"Angie Campbell." I extend my hand to him.
"Short for Angelette, but that's a hideous, awful redneck name, so Angie is just fine."
He doesn't take my hand, and it's clear he has no idea why I'm sticking it out. After a moment, he tips his head sideways and studies my hand.

Never. As long as there are stars in the sky and fire in my blood, I will be hungry for you. He nips at my throat with those deadly, delicious fangs. Always, my Veronica.

"We shall go as slow or as fast as you like, my Veronica. I am yours to command."

"Humans kiss with lips and tongue," I explain to him softly. "Can I do that to you?"
"I am yours."

"Sometimes you just count down the days, the hours, until you can be useful again," he says. "And if it ever ends, Jackie?" He lowers his voice. "You're still counting away. The months since. The exact days since. Like a tally of moments you've spent not being important to them. But don't ever think you'll wake up and not be in love with her."

“There is no falling out of love for people like you and me. Trust me, I know that when you're in love with a person who's that dedicated to their career, sometimes you don't feel like you come first."
My eyes press closed, and I stay deathly quiet, begging him to continue.

I want to be the person you picture when you're reading and dreaming because you're who I picture every single time. I love you. In light and dark, in romance and litfic. In this lifetime and the next.

She eloquently expressed why women read romance and how it showed women taking control in their lives while still being desired instead of wholly objectified. And how it had expanded to include different gender identities and become a safe space for people of color.

"You just don't get it, do you? You have no idea how important you are to me. I need you to be okay, Taryn. I can't be without you; you have to be here and okay or I won't be able to fucking function."

“I wouldn't be able to be with other people, or handle an open relationship, or take breaks-"

“I want to stay home for long weekends and have morally bankrupt amounts of sex with someone I'm in love with. Kinky, vanilla, I want it all. I want to adopt rescue animals with her. I want to take care of her, and watch her be cold in Sweden, and marvel every day at how much smarter than me she is, and.... Scarlett." His thumb swipes under my eye. "Why are you crying?"

"Confidence is not about being able to do shit, Vandy. Confidence is showing up, and trying, and not giving up because deep in your heart you know who you are and what you're capable of."

"Kinky BDSM stuff?"
"I was going to say science-y shit. But that, too."

"I'm afraid of the unpredictability of existing. I'm afraid of not being able to control the direction of my life. I'm afraid that no matter how much I plan, I won't be able to avoid hurtful and sad things. But above all ..." I take a deep breath and laugh softly, because what I'm about to say is ridiculous, even if it's true. Even if it's me. "Mostly, I'm afraid of attempting something and not being perfect at it."
