The book is drenched with the theme that; how people behave behind closed doors is never really a secret. The front of frugality. Marins' black dress, that has real fur on the inside.

I don't think I completely understand it, there are so many hints hidden behinds shadows. It just needs a little bit of light to uncover itself.

Frederick is a really interesting character, one who stood up against the Nazi dogma. His strength in character was tested by the bullying he went through. It kind of gives a dystopian view of the people who dare to stand up against injustices.

'Frederick's dreaminess, his otherness -- it's on him like a scent, and everyone can smell it.'
