I thought this was a nice retelling. I loved Thorne and his innocence and his relationship to his Gorilla family and elephant friends.

I think the sort of magical realism vibe was a very nice touch and honestly I wanted more of that.

The biggest challenge for me so far is the tonal shifts between the main plot and the romance. It’s almost like they are not part of the same story.

Slow burn. It’s well written with well thought out character development & interesting supporting characters. However I feel that for a slow burn romance you gotta give me more than a fade to black “implied” love scene. Only then to go into graphic detail about the assault, torture & disfiguring of certain characters? This imbalance makes for a less rewarding read.
