The District 10 girl just slashed her mentor's throat for tormenting her about a sandwich - not a spoiler, these are barely characters - and got shot and killed for it. Let her live!!! That's the most personality anyone in this book has showed so far!

This is a fairly endless loop of hospital visits and Lacey lying, but somehow THIS insane part of the story is totally blown past in one paragraph:

"...Lacey decided she wanted another baby, constantly bringing the subject up at mother's groups meetings. Eventually one of her new friends offered her husband for sex and to give Garnett a sibling. Lacey accepted and began sleeping with the friend's husband."

Why???

I apologise for the bad karma of snark right now, but the MC of this is a brilliant classical musician. I'm not nor do I know anything about music but I just got to a scene where she shares her favourite musicians honestly with her crush.

She's SO surprised when he responds positively and has heard of them. Two of her choices are Hans Zimmer and John Williams, those super-obscure nobodies.

BWAHAHAHA.

I thought this was the worst it could get. Oh my god. This book is...something else.

I was a markdown girl. I did know the difference. This is so sad (and well written) that I'm not actually sure if I can continue reading it.

Odd that one of the most disturbing images in this disturbing book is of Jeevan, a paparazzo turned paramedic, watching TV for days after the end of the world, and not even a week later, seeing only an empty newsroom.

"Are you fine, Hua, my old friend, or *will* you be fine?" I'm going to irritate everyone with my incessant statuses, but goddamn, this is a beautiful and terrifying horror story so far. (18 pages in! High praise indeed.)

"Of all of them in the bar that night, the bartender was the one who survived the longest. He died three weeks later on the road out of the city." You ever just read a line and you're like, 'this book is going to fuck me up'? Yeah. This book is going to fuck me up.

"It's as if everything in our house has been replaced by a replica." I'm scared to continue reading this book and scared to stop. Please keep up this insanely high standard, Jac Jemc.
