The writing is very stilted and juvenile, nothing like I recall from this author with Pillars of the Earth. Ghostwriter, maybe?

Wow! What a sad story, but boy is this book a hot mess. It is hard to believe that a journalist, and a professor of journalism at that, wrote this book. It is *all* over the place and very difficult to follow what is going on.

DNF at 68%. The girlfriend saying that she and the MC would just adopt kids to create an instant family was sickening and I didn't read beyond that. The author clearly has no idea that this goes against most conventional thinking about adoption (there are exceptions) and I thought the book was terrible before that, but was trying to finish since it was our December book club selection.
