It’s taken me almost 2 weeks to read just 5% of this book. I’m finding it bleak and slow. And maybe that’s because of how the “Old West” really was. But parts have me feeling icky and when I’d rather do chores than read…it’s time to quit the book - even when it’s a prize winning classic most people love.

Was trying to do this on audiobook, and I was struggling to follow along. I thin my brain doesn't do dual timelines well via audio. I'm going to try again in the future with the print version.

I'm trying to streamline my reading so I actually finish some of these books I'm "Currently Reading" before the new year. So I'm going to set this one aside and try it for next Christmas.

I’m so confused by the timeline of this book as it keeps jumping forward with no character or plot development.
Max keeps saying Sadie is insecure; something we never see from her.
This just isn’t working for me this year.
