This book is quite the yarn. On and on and on, fantastic spandrels everywhere

What must it have been like to read this as it was coming out serialized? It's kind of making me sad because it's obviously the sort of story to read aloud to your friends or family. That's something I really miss about having a partner. Just reading to each other

Really thinking a lot about noblesse oblige and the social values of the Victorian era. I need to finish reading the history of social welfare book I've got at Dan's. It's terribly out of style these days to be a cool good dude... Which is why men are circling the drain and dying alone with their podcasts lol

This is going to be the longest book I've ever read. Feels good. Wish I'd had books earlier in life though. This would have been a fun one to read as a tween

I don't understand why he's not allowed to talk to this girl? That makes no sense. How much of this dystopia is actually enforced and how much of it is just this guy being completely neurotic and a loser?

Okay yeah this book is actually kind of funny because the main character is such a loser, such a pitiful disaster, plus the ongoing bit about the cigarettes falling apart. It would be much funnier if it didn't land so hard. So many men are this guy right now all around us. Damn that's tragic

Holy shit have you guys read this? You have to read this. Throw away everything you think you know about the character Frankenstein and his monster. This feels like watching the original Godzilla after being raised on the '60s movies.

Fascinatingly stupid. Does he know that China exists and has existed? Does this guy really think that nowhere on Earth were there agricultural civilizations until some revolution in Western Europe in 1725?

I'm only just starting with it but it seems like it's written for small children? This makes me feel both suspicious and bored. Is this book itself the origin of conspiracy theories? Something is just "off" here

Her explanation on page 229 of what it's like to have no filter or organization of sensory input is pretty relatable. I have been curious a long time about schizophrenia thanks to a life of mental health accusations resulting in rigorously investigating wtf is wrong with me (it's just autism + CPTSD). Really curious to what extent her unwarranted childhood hospitalization where she was tortured and gaslit into believing she was an evil person for a substance use disorder she didn't even have played a role in her self-hatred. Because I've been through exactly the same thing and it fucked me up tremendously.

This book is a great companion to one I just read, Wild Faith by Talia Levin. Since I don't know anything about the history of Christianity or what the different denominations believe, this is really scratching that itch for me. But also... I wish the thing that makes the itching just didn't exist in my life or in our country or in the world lol *endless screaming*

Alright so quite a snag here when he says his autistic client was the closest to evil he's had on his couch. But I understand. And I agree: If autistic people really can't bother to be considerate of other people, then they really just shouldn't count as human beings. And if they behave like this woman in the book, being a total jackass and wasting time and making people upset on purpose with no remorse? Evil yeah

Also; he's not wrong in calling this autistic patient, Charlene, evil. She is what we would today call a fucking troll and a total pain in the ass.

It's been a great source of frustration in my life when people think I am trolling but I actually genuinely want assistance or answers so that I can go forward with the resources I need. So I get a little upset when people are trolls. The boy who cried wolf.. everyday...
